sheets and stockings

hooray for upcycling!!
 

for the necklace, i cut open a leg of a pretty, watermelony mesh stocking into a 3cm wide strip and as long as i wanted (about 40cm). i encased large, faceted plastic crystal beads in the stocking, wrapping the fabric around each bead then sectioning them off with soft wire or sewing thread.

the flower brooch is made of 10 equal circles of happy, floral flannel sheet; leave one circle flat, fold the next circle into quarters to form a triangle, then stich or hot glue to the base circle. continue folding the circles and overlap them to form the petals. attach a button in the centre and a brooch pin on the back.

the grey skirt is a gorgeous linen blend with a Möbius strip of red at knee length; it didn't quite fit me until i unpicked a side seam and inserted a panel from a linen blend skirt in similar colours (that i've loved for well over 10 years!) and stitched the lot back together.

felted wool scarf

recycling 100% wool clothing is easy- felt it! machine wash in hot soapy water, rinse in hot, and tumble dry in hot. most items should shrink like crazy when given this treatment (though each piece will shrink differently due to different wool type, weave, assembly, previous use and treatment- some may shrink very little, and can be donated to charity :)

you'll know your felt is ok to cut without unravelling when you can't differentiate between individual strands, or stretch the weave much.

i cut about 30 circles of each colour in different sizes (2-12cm diametre), but cut more later to add in specific places for strength and visual appeal. straight or zigzag sew the first two circles together slightly overlapping: pause your sewing with the needle down, and add in another overlapping circle and so on. turn over once you get to the desired length, and sew back to the start (adding reinforcing circles if necessary)
